The first project reformed an outdated, neglected pool and deck area into an enchanting retreat that is the perfect setting for both entertaining and relaxing. Plans included replacing the old pool with an inviting, refreshing new one and a home addition that increased upper deck space and provided a covered patio beneath. Because the Midwest sees the best and worst of all four seasons, choosing durable materials is always of great importance. Luxurious, enduring porcelain tiles were installed throughout the upper deck and pool areas to seamlessly blend the spaces in crisp, clean harmony while natural stone stairs have the longevity and look that this design required. Mulch beds provided a beautiful and healthy base for carefully chosen plantings like hydrangeas, grasses and boxwoods.
As important as the look is, functionality is typically the most essential part. Landscape designer, Chad Kasten, agrees.
“Figuring out the functionality of (the space) is by far the most important part of design. Then, it’s figuring out how to creatively use materials to give it a little interest and character to highlight those spaces.”
With that purpose in mind, the team installed low-voltage lighting, extending the usability of this space past sunset when safety and visibility might otherwise be diminished.
Equally as well designed and executed is the second showcase backyard. Featuring a courtyard of diagonally laid pavers with a natural-edged perimeter of mature boxwoods, a covered patio with an exquisite stone veneer fireplace, a Bloc paved walkway, porcelain tile and carefully curated, high-quality appliances and furniture, this design evokes a more formal, East Coast feeling.
