DaleTree Decks’ motto is “designed to encourage.” The decks, pergolas and porches the Sioux Falls company builds are designed to encourage living well, relaxing and making memories.
Decks are becoming an extension of people’s living spaces during the nice times of year, so we want to treat it as such. Not only do we make sure to build a quality deck, but we also take it a step further by recommending any privacy, screening, lighting, rain diversion, or shade opportunities that will help turn that space into something they really enjoy.” said DaleTree Decks owner Tim Schoffelman.
Decks, porches and pergolas evoke a sense of nostalgia about leisure time spent outdoors with family and friends. These are living spaces designed for slower living and enjoying your surroundings.
“We feel largely compelled to continue that tradition, to bring that to other people — especially up here in the north where we don’t have a 12-month season where you can always be on the deck. We want to sure decks are enjoyable for the times they can be used,” Tim said.
Tim’s passion for woodworking and building decks is exceptional. He developed an interest in woodworking in high school, and started building decks and roofing in high school and college.
“I always built decks on the side for college buddies or helping family and friends. The woodworking was more of a hobby,” Tim said. “But there was a craftsmanship element to both that I thoroughly enjoyed. When we started DaleTree Decks, it was obvious what I wanted to do.”
Tim’s love of craftsmanship shows in his designs and commitment to quality in everything DaleTree Decks builds. That excellence turns customers into long-term clients.
A DaleTree deck starts with quality materials.
“Composites have a warranty against staining or fading, with deck boards that can go all the way up to 50 years. We usually combine the composite deck boards with metal railings that will also stand the test of time. We use a framing technique so the structure supporting the deck boards and railings will last just as long,” Tim said.
DaleTree Decks takes a thoughtful, creative approach to design as they bring customers’ visions to life. Tim designs each project with details such as railings that won’t block beautiful views and lighting to accommodate evening gatherings. Pergolas on decks can be provide needed shade on sunny days.
“A lot of times customers will ask for solar lighting to add to deck posts or lighting for steps so they can see when they go down the stairs at night,” Tim said. “There’s all these considerations to turning a deck into a place where people can enjoy it and create their own family memories.”
Trends in 2024 will incorporate designer elements such as herringbone or picture framing boards on decks and steps. Lighting is being integrated into decks, and for homeowners who have nearby neighbors, privacy walls can be added, Tim said. More people also request waterproofed decks.
Tim said he’s honest with clients about each project and potential challenges that could arise. He provides project cost estimates by phone. His work isn’t inexpensive but it is built to last.
“A lot of times people are trying to budget for the upcoming year, so we’ll give them numbers to consider over the phone,” Tim said. “If it’s something they want to do that year, we’ll come out and do some measurements and … get them an actual quote.”
Tim and his crew include three or four full-time employees and two subcontractors. They work at least 10 months of the year, if not year-round, so decks can potentially be built and ready when warmer weather arrives. “There’s always a job site foreman making sure each deck or project meets customers’ expectations,” Tim said.
“We always follow up and do a final walk-through a few days after the final inspection. That allows customers to use it for a few days, and we come back and ask how they like it so far or is there anything we need to address or adjust,” Tim said.
While giving customers exceptional outdoor living spaces, Tim’s ultimate goal is to encourage and pray for clients, his team and everyone around him.
“I want every aspect of my life to be encouraging,” he said.
