“We hang everything in an aluminum track,” explains Tom Munich, co-owner of Sioux Falls Trimlight. “You don’t even know the lights are there unless you’re looking for them. With that aluminum track, we hang them just below the soffit, and we color match your soffit so it all blends in.”
Trimlight’s systems are built to withstand extreme South Dakota temperatures, which can run the gamut from triple digits in the summer months to well below freezing during the winter. Neatly tucked underneath the soffit, the lighting system is designed for protection from the elements. “The wind and rain and snow are not getting into it,” Tom adds.

For a customizable security lighting system, bulbs can even be programmed to highlight certain parts of a home or business. Bulbs can be spaced 6, 9 or 12 inches apart, depending on the customer’s preference, and the system operates through a control box that is strategically placed in a customer’s garage.

“We’re getting a lot of people being interested in their favorite sports teams and they like to display Sunday or Saturday lighting to represent team colors. I live in Brookings so it’s a lot of blue and yellow, and a lot of white and red around Vermillion. I see a lot of purple and yellow for the Minnesota Vikings,” adds Tom. “That’s a fun thing people like to do.”
Patriotic red, white, and blue color schemes are a favorite in Siouxland, Tom shares, and customers like to coordinate the lighting colors for special occasions.
“For my daughter’s birthday, she wanted pink and purple. You can add a movement pattern and you can have them cycle through certain patterns if you choose. You could hook it up to a Bluetooth speaker,” Tom explains. “If you were playing music, the lights would pulsate to the beat of the music. The thing we see the most is people will have a Bluetooth speaker set out by their front door during Halloween and they will have music playing and lights pulsing to the beat of the music as kids are coming to the door.”
“People can be sitting on their back patio and have lights around their house and they would enjoy that music and lighting feature as well,” Chris Weeg notes.
The versatility of Trimlight, and its ease of use is much of what inspired business partners Tom Munich and Tanner Joachimsen to buy the franchise and take over as owners on January 3rd. Tom and Tanner had both been Trimlight systems installers for two years before purchasing the franchise. Former franchise owner Chris Weeg still works for Sioux Falls Trimlight part time.

“We’ve done a couple of businesses and we’ve tried to get more into that market. Trimlight is just that extra ‘Hey, I’m here!’” Tom shares. “You can grab people’s attention. Your building becomes almost the same as a billboard drawing attention to itself.”
“It could replace neon signs,” Tom suggests. “It’s still so relatively new. People want to see it before they would consider it.”
