Bringing the Wow Factor with 1J Homes
There’s no shortage of the “wow” factor in this five bedroom, four and a half home at 1516 S. Scarlet Oak Drive on the northeast side of Sioux Falls. Crafted by 1J Homes, this 6,500 square foot home is sure to stop you in your tracks at every turn.
The dark iron ore LP siding and natural stone from Michael Johnson Contracting brings modern vibes to the forefront. A large, vaulted entry with a wood ceiling and sconces on either side of the pillars elegantly guide you into the front entry.
“You’ll really notice craftmanship in this home,” says Abbey Vanhove, sales and design expert for 1J Homes. “Right from the get-go, we have a beautiful, custom front door. The owner actually wanted the door to match the color of his Corvette.”
A custom wire railing staircase is the next modern piece to catch your eye as beautiful, white oak floors guide you into the main area of the home.
Three large floor-to-ceiling windows from the living room to the dining room give you incredible, panoramic views of the river. Wanting to take in more of the view? Step out onto the tile floored deck and warm yourself up next to the fire pit.
Stepping back into the living room, a large marble tile and three-sided glass fireplace by Fireplace Professionals basks you into its warmth – calling for you to cozy up on cold winter days. Encompassing the heart of the home are gorgeous benches with extra storage and white oak floating shelves.
16-foot tall, vaulted ceilings guide your eyes to the top where beautifully crafted wood beams are on full display. The wood detail carries into the kitchen and dining room space as black wood beams frame the tray ceiling. Contemporary and modern vibes are not hard to find here as black and white quartz countertops create a waterfall edge island and a full-height backsplash.
“We take the same material that is on the countertops, and we run it up the backsplash. It really creates the beautiful, seamless look. The great thing is you don’t get grout lines. So, it’s so much easier to clean!”
Tucked away behind slab cabinet doors to the left is the fridge and freezer – once again creating a seamless look in this home. Black and gold custom made finishes are found throughout the kitchen from the cabinet handles to the kitchen faucet and the island pendants.
No kitchen is complete without a walk-in pantry and that’s exactly what you’ll find tucked behind another “seamless” door. Designed by Save Our Space, you’ll find those black slab cabinets but with a twist.
“We wanted to keep the contemporary look, but also give it a bit of a different feel. So, we added some woodgrain patterns here. You get a little bit more texture while keeping with the feel of the home.”
Off the kitchen is the mudroom and laundry room. Here you’ll find a different vibe. Tile floor runs throughout the area and up the wall, and quartz countertops and light gray cabinets give this area a brighter feel.
It’s time to hold onto to your wheels as we pass from the mudroom to the garage.
“The garage is one of the best features of this whole home in my opinion. It’s unlike any garage you’ve probably ever seen before.”
So, what makes it such a showstopper? Heated epoxy floors by Kustom Epoxy Floors run the length of this 1,676 square foot garage equipped with custom cabinets, a shop and car lift.
“This is one of the ‘wow’ factors of this home. The garage goes back the full length of the house and then we have a tray ceiling featuring neon hexagon lighting. That’s where his car and lift sits. We lined the walls with outlets for all of the neon lights and signs. There are also custom cabinets throughout the back of the garage with tile backsplash. And if that’s not enough, there’s also a half bath with a vanity that matches the cabinets in the garage. Every small detail of this garage was thought out from the beginning.”
As we make our way back into the house, we head for the first of five bedrooms. The bedroom to the right features a built-in bench with wall sconces on either side of the windows. It’s the perfect, cozy space to sit down with a book. Next door we have the second bedroom converted to an office and the main bathroom. Hexagon black-and-white tile floor creates a break from the white oak floors as gold hardware beautifully complements the quartz countertops and porcelain tile shower walls.
Turning toward the master bedroom, we’ll find a lot of fun details from custom black and stained white oak beams on the ceiling to the wallpapered back wall to the warmth of the second tile fireplace. Stepping into the master bath, white marble tile continues throughout and up the walk-in shower.
“We have his and her style showerheads and handles on either side of the wall. We also got to have some fun with a geometric wallpaper around the walls of the water closet. That’s what was fun about these clients. They weren’t afraid of really bold pattens.”
All this space and we haven’t checked out the basement yet! Heading down the fun accent-carpeted staircase, we make our way to the large living area. The third fireplace ties beautifully together with the others, but it’s not the focal point of this room.
“That would be the mini jumbotron! It was one of the most talked about features of the home. It sits right above the pool table and it’s just like you would see in the stadium. It has four TV’S and features a decal of their favorite team: the Vikings.”
But the entertainment doesn’t stop there! The basement features a massive bar, dishwasher and fridge. On the other side of the bar is a pass-through garage door window and features even more fun.
“We’ve got more bar space and then a shuffleboard table and a golf simulator! There’s no shortage of entertainment down here.”
Two more bedrooms with a jack-and-jill bathroom are on the opposite side of the basement as well as another laundry room/bathroom ready for when the owners build a pool. And if one incredible garage wasn’t enough, you’ll find another down here.
“It also has custom cabinets, extra storage room in the back and a garage door that opens to the backyard.”
The final fun piece of this place is for the homeowner’s daughter.
“We built her a little playroom under the stairs and it looks like her own mini home. It has a TV and some book shelves. We did brick along the outside and then cedar shakes for the roof. She also has her own little porch light and window to peak in. It was really fun to see her reaction.”
No matter where you turn in this home by 1J, you’re sure to be wowed!
